MIA CARRILLO
@miacarrrill

Mia is a freelance writer and editor from Los Angeles, CA. She is currently living in Valencia, Spain.

Mia has had vivid dreams all her life and finds it remarkable that dreams are not a part of everybody’s life. Perhaps due to this, she is interested in memory, dream-like states, and the stories the body holds below the surface. Her writing often explores selfhood and questions of identity, such as gender, race, sexuality, and class.

Currently, she is writing her first fiction work: a novella centered around desire, obsession, and art.

Her favorite book she read in 2025 was Anne Carson’s “The Beauty of a Husband”.

When she is not writing or reading, Mia likes to bike, climb, and be outdoors; document her meals and cooking on Instagram; make clothing; and sometimes vlog on YouTube

PROJECTS (& PUBLICATION[S])

1. A BODY OF ONE’S OWN
Reed College Thesis - 2024
[Full-Length Hybrid Collection]

  • A collection of poetry and prose that explores how those around us make up our conception of “the self”. Most notably, through the women in my family. Explores what one does with generational trauma and the stories that are not ours but live in our bodies.
  • The hybrid nature reflects the intersectional identity at the core of the collection and allowed me space to write about the tensions between race and class within Los Angeles, Chicano culture, and queerness.
  • Advised by Joan Kane.

2. AWAY FROM HOME
Eddings Grant - 2023
  • [Collection of 6 Personal Essays]

  • Engages with the complexity of female friendship and queerness.
  • Analytical and creative, this collection consists of personal essays that blur the line between poetry and prose.
  • Presented the project at the end of the Summer to the Reed English Department.
